09 march 2020

i went for linux from scratch instead of following some random guide on the web

this is the sort of pain i go through

05 march 2020

i want to try and make my own linux distro.

apparently, i need some software. from a source, this is essential:

im going to switch out some of these packages:

im going to keep busybox, zlib and the linux kernel (obviously.)

i want to find alternatives for all of the gnu software.

tcc > gcc, musl > glibc, and i dont know about the other stuff.

clfs bootscripts looks fine, but i think i can replace it with something else.

this will be an exciting weekend

i figured i should watch some episodes of the show 'serial experiments lain', as it seems to have gathered a pretty big following among tech-y people.

from what i've seen (episode 8) it's pretty good. it nails the cyberpunk aesthetic perfectly.

it's a bit confusing to be completely honest, but i think this is on purpose.

unfortunately, i can't find the subtitled episodes of 9 and onwards, so i guess i'm going to watch the english dub. ugh.

overall, it's pretty good and i recommend it.

creating a new personality on the internet.

how hard would it be to create a entirely new personality to use online? all you need to seem credible is a picture of yourself, an e-mail probably and a name. maybe an address too if you want to trick them real bad. if you've had this thought, it's your lucky day!

using thispersondoesnotexist.com, it's really easy. it's a project by nvidia to use their deep learning algorithms to create faces that aren't real based on other, real faces. this sometimes lead to abominations, but most of the time, it works scarily well.

so now all you need is an e-mail, which is easy to set up, and a fake name. there are a ton of fake name generators on the web, you can even search for names of a specific nationality and get results.

so, in conclusion, it's extremely easy to create a fake identity, with the help of nvidia. thanks nvidia.

there is still the question of tracking, and yes, websites can track you when you visit them and find out where you live. this information will probably not get published as it is illegal (i hope), but there's always tor/vpns for those that want the extra security.

started a new project today, not a programming one. im archiving a bunch of linux, bsd and other iso-files. now, whenever i need to flash a usb stick or grab an iso for a vm, i can just look in my homeserver. it is pretty cool, im going out of my way to find weird operating systems like routeros and debian kfreebsd - debian with the freebsd kernel. jan6 on #envs was very helpful in this regard, they pointed me to some of these niche distros.

i want to make a todo system that actually reminds me of stuff instead of needing to check manually. that way i wont forget that i have a todo application. seems easy enough to make.

i also need to keep my config files organized somehow. i have different .bashrcs and .vimrcs on different systems i need to syncronize them.

i think i finally figured this out! there is a file in ~/.ttbp/config called 'header.txt'. i think the index page to feels copies the header from that file, so by removing the part that adds dracula.css it should work. this post will be a test i guess.

checked, it works great! hooray!

17 february 2020

some time since my last post. i'm telling myself i'm going to post more, but i can't promise myself that much.

my custom css for feels doesn't seem to be working; it reverts back to the original dracula theme every time i write a new post. yes, i told myself i could just write my own feels-clone, but that didn't get very far. maybe i should switch to bashblog.

28 january 2020

began working on a page where i can document my experiences with linux distributions. it will probably end up being a huge shill for bedrock, but so what? an in-depth log of my thoughts and opinions will be nice to have if i ever want to change distro again.

27 january 2020

some time has passed since my last entry. i found out that lua has pretty garbage libraries and have instead decided on go for my goto language. i find the syntax pretty similar to python actually with a semblance of c in there with the curly braces.

i find the standard css for feels to be not that great imo. i dont like the color scheme much. im gonna change the css when i get home. feels in general is such an easy to use program, but there is quite a bit of menu navigation before i can actually start to write stuff, so i think ill make my own version of it too, well, modify it slightly at least.

im finally kind of happy with how my site looks. made the links green instead of blue which i think looks distinct from other websites.

found out about websitecarbon.com recently and it has made me reconsider my internet viewing habits. i no longer browse reddit as much as i used to because apparently, i produce multiple grams of CO2 every time i log in there. im going to put that site up on my website under "cool websites" i think.

the mod "computercraft" for minecraft allows people to program computers using lua. so i did some googling, lua seems to be pretty nice.

gotta figure out why so few people use it. also is it oop or is it procedural? the wikipedia page doesn't tell me much.

also, trying out learning us keyboard to use with vim. it makes it a lot easier to program because curly brackets and square brackets are much harder to reach on my keymap.

gotta finish my site.

done today:

found out what i want to do with my homepage: i'll run a server side tree command every time the page loads. this way i can just add a file there to add it to my homepage
